SMBC was started in 2007 by a group of local people who enjoy the outdoors and believe in a healthy lifestyle. In July of 2007, the first group of middle and high school athletes from southern Maine attended a training camp in Fort Kent. Since then, membership has grown to over 50 families. Athletes have been participating in year round camps and training/shooting sessions and two of the original athletes have gone on to compete nationally and internationally in junior olympic events. What started out as an interest of a few people has grown to one of the largest ski clubs in Maine.
Biathlon is an olympic winter sport that combines cross country skiing with precision target shooting. Biathletes shoot with 22 caliber rifles which they wear on their backs during competition. During a race, the biathlete skis a set distance to a shooting range where they shoot five shots at knockdown targets in prone position. Depending on how many shots are missed, they will either ski penalty laps or have a time penalty. They will ski another loop and return to the range to shoot another set of five shots, this time standing up. They will then complete any necessary penalties for missed shots and ski one final lap to complete the race. Athletes also train and compete in summer biathlon events on roller-skis.
Annual Membership: $50 for individual $100 for family
We welcome motivated young athletes to participate in year round club activities. Membership includes clinics and training sessions in shooting and skiing as well as other club activities such as hiking, biking and roller-skiing. We provide opportunities to participate in competitive events, run clinics on equipment care and maintenance and offer a rifle lease program. We use several small ranges in our area for shooting practice. Additional fees are required for club sponsored trips.
